I look at winter in St. Regis as “recovery time” for the local trout. The water is abundant, cooler and oxygenated- perfect conditions to trout recovery physically from the long warm summer months. This time of year we see fish moving around a bit also. Brown trout begin to congregation together in pods and Rainbows start moving toward spawning grounds. During my time enduring winters in St. Regis I’ve found some great fishing opportunities, particularly big streamers and the reliable nymph rigs in the deep long runs. Fishing pressure is at its lowest during the winter in Montana, adding to the ability for fish to rejuvenate, get healthy and gain strength.
